2023 Acura MDX vs 2023 Infiniti QX60
We're excited to say that the 2023 Acura MDX is the first SUV to earn the Type S badge, and you're about to see why. Picture an SUV built with everything that you would normally find in a capable Acura sedan, and more. Meanwhile, we can't help but feel like the new QX60 is like your average SUV but with the promise of being sporty.
Performance
Normally, the Acura MDX would be able to support 290 horsepower on a 3.5L V6 engine. While that's already impressive for an SUV, things easily get more exciting when you upgrade to the MDX Type S trim which comes with a 3.0L Turbo engine at 355 horsepower. But of course, that's not the only reason we think the MDX is a better-performance SUV. Because it's an Acura, you won't be surprised to learn that the MDX has an incredible sport-focused build. A 10-speed transmission system, double-wishbone front suspension, ultra-rigid chassis, variable-ratio steering, and 6 available drive modes. And with the Type S upgrade, you'll also get large Brembo front brake calipers with upsized rotors along with NSX-inspired Electro-Servo brakes. Altogether, the new 2023 Acura MDX is built for greater agility, precision, and handling.
With only one engine available, the new QX60 comes with a 3.5L V6 engine at 295 horsepower. That isn't much more than the MDX's standard, and it's definitely significantly less than the Type S variant. That would be fine and all if the QX60 had anything else to offer, but the only thing to note is the Intelligent All-Wheel Drive system. Other than that, it comes up short with a 9-speed transmission and only 5 drive modes.
Safety Features
Because they're built for performance (and because they're SUVs), it's crucial to have high safety ratings and a great many driver-assist features to help prevent incidents. The new MDX is rightfully equipped with the critically-acclaimed AcuraWatch package which houses all of your essentials like collision mitigation, lane-keeping, pedestrian detection, and adaptive cruise control features. But for added security, you have the option of including other available features for more protection on the road. There's a Surround-View Camera which gives you a useful aerial view of your MDX for confident maneuvering, and a Rear Cross Traffic Monitor to help you back out of places safely. But perhaps one of our favorite features is the Blind Spot Information System which helps you spot vehicles in those tricky areas when it could cost you an accident.
Surprisingly, the QX60 also has a decent array of safety and driver-assist features. You have access to a handful of standard features like rear and forward automatic and emergency braking, collision warning, and lane-keeping functionality. There are also available features like the Around View Monitor and Pro-PILOT Assist which helps with highway driving. In this regard, it's up to preference at this point which you can uncover at your local dealership.
Interior
While the technical layout of the new MDX is very performance-heavy, the cabin itself is a great display of an accommodating SUV. You can opt for available full-grain leather and open-pore wood trims for a more high-end look, and you can set the mood with available Iconic Drive Ambient Lighting which makes the MDX glow with radiance in anticipation of an exciting drive. Drivers will look forward to every road trip no matter how long the ride with a comfortable driver's seat complete with available 16-way power adjustments and 9 different massage modes. For those who like to be prepared for every trip (or in the middle of a big move), you have a maximum of 95 cubic feet of cargo space to do with what you will. You'll also like having hidden storage compartments to stash away a few extra items.
There's not much that the QX60 can do that the MDX can't already do. They both have 12.3-inch dashboard screens which they call the "Infiniti Dynamic Meter Display" and the "Acura Precision Cockpit" respectively. They both have similarly sized head-up displays. Both have a panoramic moonroof, although the MDX has CabinControl to adjust the shade. Another major difference between the two vehicles is the fact that the QX60 has an available 17-speaker Bose audio system which is impressive on its own, but the MDX supports a grander 25-speaker ELS Studio 3D sound system that has over a thousand watts and high-fidelity carbon material.
Bottom Line
The new Acura MDX, especially the MDX Type S, is like having the best of both worlds. You get the power and build of a true sports car with all of the fun and comfortable cabin features of a great SUV. The QX60 is a great SUV, but it's really just that. So if you think about it, going with the MDX is like getting a better value for your dollar.
